Jacobs Ladder (mp3)
Space Elevator Hymn
Author's notes | Lyrics |
Original lyrics
"...And he came to the place and
stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones
of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep.
And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of
it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and
descending on it! And behold, the LORD stood above it [or "beside him"] and
said, "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac;
the land on
which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants; and your
descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad
to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you
and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless
themselves..."
King James Bible
Author's notes:
The original of this song is truly
sublime, and I felt that the story of Jacob's dream speaks to, and may
inspire what may become mankind's greatest achievement - the Space
Elevator. I deem the space elevator to be the coming of age of the human
species, the moment we escape the imprisoning gravity well of our planet.
It's creation will herald the severing of Mankind's umbilical cord, the
freeing of our dependence on our terrestrial nest and the beginning of out
greatest adventure.
I felt that re-crafting the lyrics of this wonderful hymn would not in any
way detract from the inspirational thrust of the song. Jacobs Ladder exalts
in the spiritual uplifting of the Human Spirit. True, I have removed the
direct references to religion, but I feel that the nature and intent of the
song remains intact.
I intend other voices than my own, but I wanted to hammer out the 'new'
lyrics and composition.
So here is a new version, heralding mankind's urge for discovery, adventure
and freedom.
Lyrics:
We are climbing Jacob's ladder,
We are climbing Jacob's ladder,
We are climbing Jacob's ladder,
Sojurn the heavens across
Every thread goes higher, higher,
Every thread goes higher, higher,
Every thread goes higher, higher,
Sojurn the heavens across
Are you ready, ready to travel?
Are you ready, ready to travel?
Are you ready, ready to travel?
Sojurn the heavens across
Do you, want your, do you want your freedom?
Do you, want your, do you want your freedom?
Do you, want your, do you want your freedom?
Sojurn the heavens across
When I lay down lay down this body
When I lay down lay down this body
When I lay down lay down this body
I'll sojurn the heavens across
We are climbing Jacob's ladder, etc.
Stephen Goodfellow 2008
